How often should a cedar hedge be trimmed?

Once a year is enough for a healthy hedge. Every cut pushes the cedar to branch out near the trimming point: that is what thickens the foliage and gives it a clean line. Skipping a few years costs more than people expect — the hedge stretches out, opens up, and the bottom thins. A hedge left to itself for too long cannot be brought back in a single pass: it is reined in gradually, over more than one season.

Trimming that respects the living wood

Cedar has one trait that governs the whole method: it does not grow back from old brown wood, only from green foliage. A cut that goes too deep leaves a gap that stays. Trimming is therefore kept to the year's green growth, and the hedge is shaped slightly wider at the base than at the top, so light reaches the bottom and keeps it from going bare. The timing follows the plant — once the new growth is out, and away from the heavy heat.
